Dreadnought Waiheke Island Syrah
Our final long lunch in Cairns at the Salt House on the waterfront. No formal notes but i have always loved this Shiraz from Waiheke Island in the middle of Auckland Harbour NZ. Plummy spicy and savoury with supple tannins. Overtones of Northern Rhone and easy to drink.

Aug 29th, 2021Mid to deep crimson in colour. Aromas of red berries, a little oak, a bunchie stalky note, spices including nutmeg and a dash of chocolate. Medium plus bodied quite northern Rhone in style more than SA. Not dissimilar to another excellent North Island Syrah as in Trinity Hill, Hawkes Bay. Very good, very tasty. From the unlikely destination of Waiheke Island which is in the middle of Auckland Harbour, which is massive in area compared to Sydney Harbour. One would think the rainfall might be a little high for quality viticulture but not so. Also when you think that one of the best new world Chardonnays in Kumeu River is made just to the north of Auckland.

Jan 17th, 2021Celebrating after Australia’s most famous horse 🐎 race The Melbourne Cup our horse Johannes Vermeer came 2nd by a neck in the Downs Club Calcutta. This Wine from New Zealand was a Northern Rhone style with notes of Meat Bacon Spices and Pepper. Love this medium bodied style finishing with savoury tannins.

Nov 7th, 2017Shiraz from NZ. Not as bold and full as a Syrah from the Rhone. Had notes of wet leaves suggestive of the cooler climate. Chewy tannins and longish finish.

Sep 9th, 2016Blwckberry jam, dark plum, tar, black cherry and black pepper. Fruit-forward nose, more savory on the palate. Moderate, fine-granted tannins. Warming (14.5%) The Delectable consensus score of 91 is solid. Try it with grilled filet or grilled pork chop.
