Maison L'Envoyé
Chateau Vivier Monopole Fleurie Gamay Noir
This is upper level Beaujolais. Depth and texture in spades. Nose has perfectly ripe dark cherries and berries. Spice and crushed granite in the background, and a fresh-baked bread-like note. Deeply flavored (as one might expect from 50-yr old vines), with deep fruit, acids, and stony minerality all working together. Some very fine-grained tannin provides a little chalky feel in the finish. This will last and improve a few more years but is terrific now.

Aug 16th, 2023Maison L'Envoyé, The House of the Messenger, was born out of the Oregon/Burgundy partnership of Evening Land founder Mark Tarlov and Louis Michel Liger-Belair of Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair. Prior to his wine ventures Tarlov wrote speeches for Chief Justice Warren E. Burger, as well as directed the 1999 rom-com Simply Irresistible starring Sarah Michelle Gellar. I can only assume he's Frank Abagnale's little brother. This is some serious Beaujolais. Ultra pure floral notes of iris and lavender play well off the high-toned bright red fruit along with layers smoke, licorice, stone, and herbs. A stylish alloy of modern, Cru Beaujolais and rich New World decorum.

Mar 31st, 2017The 2015 was great; lovely floral notes, fruit but so much more backbone and dryness than I had ever experienced with Beaujolais.
This 2016 seems less lovely, less floral and simply an interesting dry red wine.
$20 at a supermarket in Michigan.
