Maison des Hâtes
Vau de Vey Chablis 1er Cru Chardonnay
Chablis, Burgundy, France

Super closed at first, with air, as it warms, it slowly unfurls. Starts to give up citrus, green apple, wet sea shells, and straw. Initially in the mouth it was almost emaciated and bitter, but over time becomes a bit more friendly. It still remains lean and quite crisp, with zingy acids. Not great depth. Flavor-wise, it’s much more about stoniness than fruit. Will revisit tomorrow.
UPDATE: Night 2 it has continued to open and is softer and more open. More lemony fruit is present and the finish is longer and friendlier. Upping from 8.8 to 9.0. If you’re drinking this in the short term, consider a multi-hour decant.

I suspect, that when (if) the ‘23 vintage assessments roll in, it may be a different story than ‘17. I have read that the ‘23 year was a “solar” year, producing full, rounded, mature ( as in fruit) wines.
So…after roughly 1/2 hour standing open( with a lil’ bit poured out), we’re getting round lemons, Lots of seashore. As if one were to lick the white cliffs of Dover i like to ponder., a little bit of biscuit, refreshingly dry but not severe.
The palate outdoes the nose at this point. And with this first bottle I don’t think we’re making it to day two. Glad i bought 4. I hope i didn’t give gifts…must check.

I’ve been lucky enough to enjoy a large number of bottles of Raveneau and Dauvissat Chablis over the years, premium cru and grand. This Laroche bottling has elements of both. Tons of substance, big minerality and even a touch of the corn tortillas
