Luis Seabra Vinhos
Xisto Cru Tinto
Nose has blackberry jam, moist leather, fig paste, charred wood, chopped dark chocolate and faint vanilla.
Palate has dried blueberry, blackberry, dried black currant, muddy garden soil, faint dried strawberry with mild tannins and medium acidity.
Solid pairing to a baked 'Mac & Cheese' dish fancied up with a béchamel sauce, Gorgonzola & Fontina cheeses, breadcrumbs and Casarecce Corte pasta. (Interpretation of a recipe courtesy of Joanne Weir)

A ruby red core, with a vibrant and clear ruby at the edge. The nose is complex, dense and persistent with primary red and dark red fruit notes, subtle spices, as well as earth and minerality notes deepening the complexity. Not a powerhouse, but a perfect reflection of the wines Luis makes that texturally remind me of the Northern Rhone, Burgundy and even Barolo to an extent. There is an elegance to these wines akin to those regions, with a core of terroir and structure. A supremely cerebral vigneron wine that makes you think while enjoying it.
With the arrival of Luis Seabra and his own line of wines, he is taking Portugal wines to the next level. The wines from Luis Seabra are generating the most buzz of any producer out of the Douro Valley, with both red and white wine at all price levels there is something for everyone!

An Atlantic red from DOURO. Needs bottle to soften the stems.

Not the pop and pour all star usually is and tight and needed a lot of air. Better to check back later in a few years.

Nov 15th, 2021Perhaps the best Douro table wine we’ve tried, even if it was probably still too young and will be more enjoyable with more bottle aging.

Dec 17th, 2022The nose and palate have filled out since we last had this 2 years ago. Luis Seabra is redefining dry wines from Portugal. Highly recommended.
BTW, a field blend from ancient vines, ABV 12.5.

Very dark in color. Nose mostly of mineral with little fruit. Red fruit on the palate-strawberry, raspberry and cherry. The acid mineral skeleton sets off the fruit. A well defined presentation. ABV 12.5%. Luis Seabra makes some of the most interesting wines coming from the Iberian Peninsula. 4*
