Leeuwin Estate
Art Series Margaret River Chardonnay
Lunch with friends on Saturday. Thanks Jon and Jilly. See previous tasting notes. A lovely mature Art Series Chardonnay tasting brilliantly in its 13th year. Everything in balance.

Jun 27th, 2021The Drinking Window experts say I should drink my last 2008 Art Series Chardonnay. Delicious as always with a timeless feel about it and the thumbprint of luscious stone fruit and pear. The 2016 was just released and reviewed by Ray Jordan who is a WA Wine expert who gave it 99+ points. He said he gave the 2015 99 points yet the 2016 is a better wine and given he doesn’t give 100 he then had to give the 2016 99+ points. The 2008 is drinking beautifully. Could go on short term but why bother.

Apr 21st, 2019Trademark Peaches Cream and Cashews. In the fuller luscious style - oak held in check but no way the wine could be described as restrained. The beautiful ripe Chardonnay fruit carries the day. Singing at 11 years of age.

Feb 5th, 2019Always a brilliant if not predictable Chardonnay. I have had so many bottles of this wine over many vintages I think I could almost pick it blind. Must be in the conversation when discussing Australia’s best Chardonnay. For me it has this dried pear character. For this vintage the oak is in perfect balance and the fruits not overly ripe. Leeuwin Estate have tinkered with the bigness over the years and this is on the more restrained side of their average. Wonderful.

Sep 30th, 2018Light golden color with crisp stone fruit aromas with a gentle nutty fragrance. On the palate peaches, pears and tropical fruits, nothing overpowering, vivid acidity and Burgundian minerality was present. Lingering finish with a smoky/toasty oak gave warmth on the ending. Very nice wine but at $90 not worth the price.

Mar 20th, 2016The 2008 was yet another good vintage for Margaret River. A well balanced Chardonnay striking a balance between the old over oaked ripe style and the new lean style. Lovely nose of cashew and stone fruit. Sweet fruit on the palate with nectarine and perfectly judged oak. Great length.
