La Riojana
La Rioja Bonarda Malbec
La Rioja, Cuyo, Argentina

Cheap Arg blend with a heavy Bonarda percentage. The label is pretty nice art. And it is ‘Fair-trade’ certified! Very dark color. Almost black. Smells like berry molasses. And something wet. Fur? Wet cut lawn? Something funky going on for sure. The flavors are fake grape flavor. Or like grape jelly. Grape Jolly Ranchers. It’s just plonk really. The kind of cheap Argentinian Malbec that is cheap and gauged to the childish pallets of American soda lovers. I’ve had much more elegant and enjoyable Bonarda. This is a disappointment even at $8…

Dec 9th, 2025Ratings for this really are not doing it justice. Fair trade, organic, screw top, and less than $10. For a cheapy this is good plonk. Nice and jammy with a smooth finish that is a little sweet. Take it out for a picnic and leave the corkscrew at home!

Not the best Malbec. Medium body and too juicy. Good with pasta and red sauce.
