K Vintners
Powerline Walla Walla Valley Viognier
Walla Walla Valley, Oregon/Washington, USA

Deep gold. Rich nose almost reminiscent of a 1970s-era Napa Chardonnay, with sweet cream, a little unsalted butter, deep pear fruit, almost verging into tropical fruit territory. Deep in the mouth as well, with deep pear and lots of mineral texture. Seems almost tannic. Although Garagiste didn’t disclose this when they offered it (at a very good price), it’s 15.5% alc! (If I’d known, I’d have passed.) Overall, it’s a good wine, though I doubt I’d have been able to call Viognier blind.
PS- If you’re on CellarTracker, please leave your handle in a comment so I can follow you there, as I’ve started an account because of this app’s constant issues.

I picked up a couple of these when I visited the K Vintners tasting room outside of Seattle a couple years ago. Killer QPR.
It’s tough to be excited about domestic Viognier, but this has so much texture and ripe fruit! Pop and pour. Yellow in the glass. Big aromatics of honeyed yellow fruits, honeysuckle and sea spray. Richly textured but not too unctuous, there’s loads of lemon, underripe white peach and a finish of savory mineral-type grip. A Viognier that, at 5yrs, still seems young with plenty of dense layers. Tasty.

Deep gold. Dried apricots on the inviting nose. Full-bodied palate confirms the nose adding balsa wood, and dried apple with a bit of savory tennis shoe note that blossoms into marzipan with air exposure. Acidity is low as is typical of the variety, but present enough to accompany a hearty meal. Finish is long and continues the palate. Very reminiscent of Condrieu in style and profile, though with a bit more weight.

Indeed not for me. Delectable at first made the same mistake I made when ordering this wine. It thought it was K Vintners Syrah from Powerline vineyard. It wasn’t l, it was their straight Viognier. Probably normally used to blend with the Syrah to get a dark intense color. I absolutely didn’t care for it. Flat, single note, no expression and a bit of that buttery, lactic acid undertone you get from the second fermentation in the barrel, which they probably did to the white wine. Saved it for the next day to see if it would gain in expression. Basically worse. Had to dump the bottle. 😏

HWT - interesting that in 2019 we liked the 2017 and thought it had nice acidity and no oak but now in 2020 having the 2016 it falls way flat. No acid, a bit oaky, not much flavor-going to try it shortly with Indian food and see if that helps. $46 and 15%
