I like this ‘16 a bit better than I recall liking the ‘15 (which had screeching acids). Intense nose. Perfumey, with kids of crushed volcanic gravel, a deep animal fur note, spice, and oozy red berries. Deep in the mouth, it’s got tons of volcanic stone minerality, old leather, and plenty of macerated dark cherry underlying it. Acids are there but integrated. Still quite a bit of tannin chalkily coating the mouth. Will go great with the rustic pasta dish I’m making.

Lots of juicy fruit but maybe a bit on the early side of ripe.

Gorgeous, brooding, mineral-driven. The nose was a combination of animal and mineral that made it smell like blood (in a good way). Dark, crunchy fruit on the palate, smooth, savory, lively acidity, great balance, and a medium finish.

An interesting but ultimately demanding wine. Nose is great: tangy (a little VA), rich, smoky berries, warm fur, exotic spice. But in the mouth it throws some elbows. Intense acidity, lean feel. Some chalky tannin as the finish progresses. Not a sipper. Would be good with “Sunday gravy” red meat sauces.

Balsamic, earth and subtle black fruit on the nose. Floral, ripe and dark fruited, with a medium body, bright acid, sneaky leathery tannin and a saline quality.
