Hourglass
Blueline Estate Napa Valley Merlot
Great aromatics on this one - raspberries, baking spice and I swear I get hints of bergamot. This is a big wine. There’s a slight sweetness on the entry, with concentrated flavors of blueberry, vanilla, and hints of mocha. Typical silky mouthfeel I’ve come to expect from hourglass. Great acidity here too. Impressive - especially given the vintage.

May 12th, 2018Medium to dark mix of garnet and ruby red. Layered nose with spices, cedar, dark fruits and black tea. Quite dark too. Medium tannins and medium plus to almost full bodied. Super extracted with lots of oaky influence. Layered with notes of cigar boxes, dark cocoa, plums, cherries, a touch of prunes and crushed rocks undertone. Long finish with quite a bit of power. Drink till 2020.
Grabbed for under $50.00 in PA.

This is the wine that got me back into Merlot - amazing fruit, round and voluptuous with lovely smooth tannins and 'bring me more' appeal.

Aug 1st, 2017Finally getting around to posting wines from my annual Napa trip from two weeks ago. Always goes by quick! Lots of fun new stops this year.
We returned to Hourglass after our visit in 2018 as the wines are just so enjoyable, but the tasting cave may be one of the coolest spots to enjoy a glass of wine.
Consistently a top merlot for me. This vintage shows a slightly darker profile with added savory notes. Still mainly black cherry with baking spices, coffee beans and cherry tobacco leaves up front, but it turns spice and cinnamon driven with currant, plum and dark cocoa toward the finish.

'13 is the new '97. Amazing Merlot in its youth. Enjoy over the next 6-10 years.
