A whiff of rare meat, some blackberries, and green herbs. This wine has lively acidity and smooth tannins, with bright berry fruits: plum, black raspberry, and red currant. It needs 30 min in the decanter to open up. A blend of 40% trincadeira, 40% aragonez, and 30% castelão. 14% abv, about $14 (New Hampshire)

Manly, with a hint of barely controlled violence, and a forest of the fullest moustaches ever seen by Europeans.

Reductive, closed and sulfurous; it needs copious air. Then: Bitter cherry, blackberry, and minty leather. It’s soft-textured, with modest acidity and a finishing tannic bite. This is a blend of Aragonês, Trincadeira, Touriga Nacional, and Syrah. 13.5% abv | $10 (sample)

This is not my first Portuguese red, but again, I'm amazed at the price-to-quality ratio of this wine. It's a nice, everyday food-friendly red. I taste cranberry, raspberry, and black cherry, with some toasty notes, and nice acidity on the longer-than-expected finish. Only $10, you can't lose. This was a media sample provided to me. I'd pair this with a hearty meal like Thanksgiving, pizza, just about anything.
