Brief notes. Peach and pear together with spice and a trace of pepper. Plenty of power on the palate. Probably one of Australia’s best examples of Gruner Veltliner. Bought at the Cellar Door in the Adelaide Hills in March 2021.

From Australia’s leading exponent of Gruner Veltliner - Hahndorf in the Adelaide Hills. We visited there in April 2021 and bought a selection. Notes of Granny Smith Apple and peach. Barb thought a cumquat note showing its unctuous texture. Medium minus acid. Halliday says we should cellar Gruners for a decade or so like a good Riesling. Not sure this vintage has the requisite acid. Probably why the 2018 has more immediate appeal and has won more Gold Medals at Australian Shows, than Michael Phelps in the pool, as you can see on the label. Had my last bottle on November 1, 2023 with similar notes. A delicious bottle of wine showing spice, quince and honeysuckle.

A pale yellow in colour. Aromas of lemon and peach. On the palate a subtle fudge confectionery note but after some time mandarin flesh - textural. Generally regarded as one of the best Gruners in Australia and a prolific gold medal winner on the Australian Show Circuit. Visited the winery in the Adelaide Hills in Easter last year where I bought a mixed 6 pack of Gruners.

Served blind by me at Sue Bell’s dinner party with Bruce Redman. After being tricked by Sue all week with blind tastings at the winery I was determined to get square. She was up to the task getting just the state wrong. Once I said Adelaide Hills she knew it was a Gruner. Hahndorf Hill are acknowledged as the best producers of Gruner in Australia. Taking its lead from the GV’s of Austria’s Kamptal region. Grapefruit, Citrus and stone fruit. A multi award winner on the Australian Show circuit. A gold medal at the Decanter World Wine Awards London 2020.

Intially bursted from the glass with tropical aromatics but these made way for a more white fleshed fruit spectrum. Good length in the palate, super pithy to taste, slightly unctuous in texture but a good dose of acidity coming through. Not bad.

Fine example of SA winemaker using new varieties and meeting the Austrian standard - just wonderful after too much Sauv Blanc and Chardonnay of late

This wine is clear pale lemon green in colour,

The nose is clean with medium (+) intensity of pear, peach and honey.

The palate is dry with medium (+) acid and medium alcohol. It is medium bodied with medium (+) flavours the same as the nose but there is also a pepperiness which is not on the nose. The finish is medium (+)

A very good wine which is very enjoyable.

I've never had one of these aged. This was blind tasted at a Gruner tasting and I immediately thought that this was in the line up as a curve ball. I could not believe how much this reminded me of Riesling from Mosel. ACE sorbet, canned peach, marmalade, butterscotch, kerosene and wet rock. Length, amazing structure.
