Haber Family Vineyards
Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon
It's time for my #FridayCabernetfix.
Deep ruby in color with a short purple rim.
Beautiful nose of blackberries, sweet plums, cooked cherries, peppercorn, cedar, vanilla, toast, tobacco, chocolates, spices, wild flowers, light alcohol and herbs.
Full bodied, smooth and elegant, with medium acidity and long legs.
Dry and very fruity on the palate with blackberries, plums, black currants, coffee, cedar, vanilla, leather, earth, peppercorn, spices, tobacco, chocolates and light cola.
Long finish with round tannins and cherries.
This is a delicious Cabernet Sauvignon from Howell Mountain.
This 6 year old is starting to drink very nicely. Still young and needs a few years in the bottle to mature properly. Would continue to age nicely in the next 10 to 15 years.
Fruit forward, rich and opulent. Spicy, tangy and interesting.
Needs 2 hours to open up properly, so be patient.
A great sipping wine, and will pair nicely with a nice piece of steak.
Aged for 19 months in oak barrels. Only 16 barrels produced. Unfiltered and unfined.
14.9% alcohol by volume.
93 points.
$80.

Not surprising for the vintage, I found the 2014 version of this to be much more accessible and plush than the 2015, but at the end of the night, it showed a glimpse of that profile.
This was poured in to a decanter and then consumed over the next three hours. These wines are always so Bevan-esque, in that they are richly textured and hedonistic. Aromatically, lots of baking spices like cinnamon, nutmeg and sweet espresso, with fresh out of the oven mixed berry pie. On the palate it’s filled with black cherry infused dark chocolate, graham cracker sweetness, and freshly squeezed blueberries. Initially it was sporting a classically Howell Mtn tannic finish, but it softened at the end of the night. The 2014 didn’t have a hard edge from day one. This seems to have more aging potential.

Drank side by side with a 2001 2nd growth Bordeaux and it held its own. Decanted. Evolved into a stellar cab over the evening. Distinctive Howell Mountain fruits and taste profile.

Jul 31st, 2018Compared to what I've been able to get to know about Haber with current releases, this one seems to be made in a very different style. Either that or this bottle was off.....or maybe aging isn't the greatest? I'd like to believe that this wine is in a really strange spot. Brambly raspberry and black cherry. Wasn't getting a lot of blue fruit. Wasn't getting a lot of chocolate, spice that I usually get. The newer releases are quite a bit more full bodied and although they are more red, there are subtle coffee, blueberry and black roasted fruit and spice notes. Quite a divergence from that. The structure of this wine was there, but this was just a little lackluster than I expected.

Tonight was the Taste of Howell Mountain event in Dallas and the line-up was absurd. Aloft, Adamvs, Lamborn, Dunn, Outpost, O'Shaughnessy and many other rock stars. After tasting through many '13s and '14s, the '14 Haber Howell Mountain was the Wine of the night without a doubt. His '13 was great and when he said his '14 was excellent I thought it couldn't surpass it...it most definitely did. Buy this stuff up! The nose is out of this world...smoked meats, caramel, candied almonds. Jackpot!
