Grifalco di Lucania
Aglianico del Vulture
I am a biased Aglianico rooter, so be forewarned: it’s that feral, vulcaníc ferocity, slipped into a resolutely medium to medium/ light body that is so inviting. Strong tannic grip under every blackberry & black currant sip. If anything, a poor man’s Barolo at 18/19$.

Aug 11th, 2021Beautiful cherry, dusty chocolate and smoky tar aromas very pushed forward. Flavors are juicy, silky and firm with remarkable tannic grip. Black pepper and grainy cocoa powder lingering on the cat tongue finish. There’s both a resinous and a fresh quality, owing to terrific acidity. Simply outstanding example of volcanic Aglianico at a great price.

1 person found it helpfulJun 1st, 2016It has the level of tannins I compare with a cat's tongue. Rough and charming in one fell swoop. With enough ripe dark fruit and medium acid to make you fall in the kitty's embrace. IF you like it is kitty licks you. I really like this one. Good pick if at Osteria Mozza!

Oct 27th, 2016Not quite ready. Tannins are pretty harsh, maybe pair with food? INTENSE!

Oct 26th, 2023Like a cross breed of fresh Loire Cab Franc and dusty Langhe Nebbiolo.
Lots of little notes that don't often socialize. Graphite, pencil shavings, cherry leather, old attic and moth balls, and cedar lining and a creeping pyrazine thing that takes an extra 7-8 extra seconds to say hello. And also blackberries, crushed rose petals, and salty volcanic soil.
All wrapped up in a big tannin tortilla.

As you open this wine you begin a trip to the arch of Italy’s boot. Although this southern, mountainous region has a few small vineyards under vine. The big red grape Aglianico is limited to the slopes of an extinct volcano Mount Vulture. Notes of blackberry, black cherry and wild herbs. Well-balanced and tamed. On hold for 5 years and it’s sensational.
