The 2017 Force Majeure ‘Estate’ Syrah is a scintillating new bottling by the talented Todd Alexander. The aromatic range is thrilling from bacon fat to dried herbs and lavender infused black tea that collide with rich dark fruits and sagebrush undertones that take shape in the glass. The texture and mouthfeel of the wine is seriously good while the bright acidity provides a beautiful backbone. A deep core of dark fruits expansively greet you on the palate, combining with shades of Hoisin sauce, smoked brisket, coffee grounds and suggestions of blueberry compote that all create a beautiful range of flavors. Gorgeous now in its youth the 2017 Force Majeure ‘Estate' Syrah will cellar well for the next fifteen years — but is nearly impossible to resist in its youth. Drink 2020-2035- 96

This is now the second time in the past year that I have tried the absolutely massive 2016 Force Majeure Syrah, a dazzling, dense and hedonistic Red Mountain Syrah carefully crafted by the talented Todd Alexander. Roughly 20% of this wine underwent while cluster fermentation. The Syrah was aged in 25% new oak for 18 months prior to bottling. The nose shows wonderful dark fruits with smoky character, sage, dark chocolate, and damp earth. The palate is exceedingly refined. Black tea, black forest cake, cigar ash and smoked brisket flavors with citrus rind undertones that all marvelously combine. There is a seamless quality to this wine that glides across the mid-palate. Seductive and rich, yet maintaining a wonderful elegance and an intriguing salinity, this is a simply tremendous bottling by Force Majeure. A year ago when I had this wine I mentioned that this might be the best Red Mountain Syrah I have ever tasted. On second glance, my first impression was correct. Drink 2020-2035- 95

Tasted at Oakton Wine Shop & Bistro. Dark purplish ruby red. Very perfumey, spices, chocolate, herbal, and blackberries. Medium plus tannins (7/10) and full bodied. Rich palate with dark berries, black pepper, anise, cocoa and sweet spices. Very dry, long and lingering finish. Drink till 2027.

Deep and rich purplish red. A bit mute on the nose but with solid crushed gravel with some spices, meaty and dusty black cherries. Medium plus acidity (6.5/10) and full bodied. Layered palate with dark cocoa, spices, leather, black olives, savory, dark berries and licorice. Long and lingering finish. Time will reward this baby. Drink from 2019 till 2032. (92+)

This is the estate Syrah from Force Majeure and Todd Alexander. Made up of 100% Syrah from the top of their hillside vineyard, this wine definitely brings out some of those stoney characteristics. Aged in a combination of new and used French oak barrels for 18 months. Only 350 cases produced.

Sample provided by the estate. Released today for $70.00.

Very nice and elegant Syrah from Washington. 97+ RP, maybe needs some air to reach that level but a clear 95 PZ score for now. Tasting this blind (which I did not do) I would not have guessed new world.

A fantastic wine. Dark, earthy, chewy. Lots of dark fruit flavors. Long finish great balance. Just plain delicious.
