Fundação Oriente
Colares Malvasia
Colares, Lisboa, Portugal

This is so wonderful but the vineyards are disappearing at a fast clip to make room for beachfront property. Lots of acid. Builds weight and richness with air and temp in the glass. Citrus to tropics. Lees? Broad minerality.

Jun 1st, 20262015 vintage. Since 1999 the Fundaçao Oriente tries to preserve the wines of Colares near Lisbon, almost extinct due to urbanisation. Planted close to the sea in profound sandy soils, the ungrafted vines never suffered from phylloxera. This is the rare white Colares, made from Malvasia grapes. Light golden colour. Intense aromatics with dried pineapple, honey with a hint of seaweed. Not particularly refined, but it has a character of its own with serious power given the low alcohol content (12,5% abv.). In some ways it is reminiscent of an old white Graves. Worth trying and we should be happy that there is still some wine produces in Colares.
