Ferrando Vini
La Torrazza Brut Erbaluce di Caluso Spumante
Blind reaction:
“I like it a lot, tastes like it’s from serious soils.” When Abe’s first remarks are about the soil, you can be sure the wine is a winner.
The inside scoop:
From a house famed for its Nebbiolo, Luigi Ferrando vinifies the region’s indigenous white grape – Erbaluce di Caluso – in the Champagne tradition. Precision, complexity and tradition all come through. With less than 200 cases made per year, this wine is both regal and rare.

2009 Ferrando Erbaluce di Caluso Spumante "La Torrazza" - first time I've ever had the Erbaluce grape and this wine. - Dry, medium (-) body and acid, creamy carbonated bitter texture with unbalanced salinity and mineral components. Felt like a watered down "soda machine carbonated" apple martini. I dunno know... Despite some good recommendations... I still can't embrace it for $37 bucks a bottle. Not my jam.
