Familia Castaño
Mediterranean Monastrell
Great QPRs part 2: has been so consistent over the years, & at 8$ makes me wonder how the heck they can produce it (the price hasn’t budged too much over a decade). An Eric Solomon special. Dark blackberries & cassis notes, ripe but in check. Has outshone many a wine costing 3x at gatherings.

Dec 25th, 2022Busy, but decent label. Screw-top. Dark bruised plum color in the glass. Aroma is musky with some tropical spices in the mix. Also prunes and fresh wine must in the winery. Flavors are robust and fruit driven. Plums, wild berries and nice grape jam (not jelly). Finish has plenty of tannin and some bitter bite. Anethole (the licorice aroma compound).

2016 Castano Monastrell
$7.99 $5.99 w/Binny's Card
"I hadn't encountered their entry-level, young and unoaked Monastrell for a while, but I tasted the 2016 Monastrell, which fermented in stainless steel and was kept in concrete vats for four to six months. They used some 25% to 30% full clusters in the vinification, and I've never smelled anything like this from Castaño. This is floral and fresh, elegant and balanced, with moderate extraction, ripe tannins and a very pleasant mouthfeel with clean, focused flavors. This is almost too serious for the price. Wow!"

Leather, sawdust, heavy enough to pair with a flavorful meal.
