Volcanic wine FTW. Gorgeous, layered scents of grapefruit pith, jackfruit and wet pavement give way to electrifying citrus pith, yellow herbs, and a deep crushed-stone minerality that has a beautiful saline edge to it. Made from 70+ year-old Listsn Blanco vines grown high up (1100m) the sides of the Tenerife volcano.

Mature tropical fruits, rubber balloon powder, oxidative, mushroom, savory complexity. Medium body with limey acid and gravelly nature. Dank like a Forest after the rain. Clown car sums it up.

Seldom is one presented with a wine for which one has no preconceptions, but this was the case for this 100% Listán Blanco from 100 year old vines grown on volcanic soil above 1000m in Tenerife, which I enjoyed this weekend. I had absolutely no idea what to expect.

Deep golden in colour - with a slight pink hue, in fact - this ‘Benjé Blanco’ by the innovative winemakers Envinate is a unique, rich white that strings a medley of peach, apricot and stone fruits across a grippingly dry, mineral finish. There is a strong oaky character to the nose that reminds me of the white wines of Lopez de Heredia. But this is lighter and has a gracefulness on the palate that carries through to a long, thoroughly satisfying finish, alongside an element of sulphur. Excellent. Will no doubt age well.

I keep thinking this can’t get better, but it does.

Minerals, a little Albariño like flavor. Dry. Not funky. Good but not quite minerals I want.

Sharp, flinty Listán Blanco (aka Palomino, the grape most Sherry is made from) from approximately 100-year-old ungrafted vines from several small plots on the slopes of the Teide, a dormant 12,000 ft high volcano on the island of Tenerife. Fermented in concrete, partially skin-macerated, partially aged under flor (like Sherry). Elegant, complex. Subtly smoky, with nutty, yeasty aromas. Saline, crushed stone, minerals and some notes of citrus (grapefruit) 🌋🔥🔥🔥
