Produced by CA Shafer Vineyards, wine created by Doug Shafer and Winemaker Elias Fernandez, who began collaborating in 1984—hence the name. Deep Ruby with aromas of dark fruit, oak, cigar box and forest floor. On the palate flavors of black cherry, plum and blackberry with cedar, tobacco and floral spice. Medium+ finish, well balanced ending with fruit, oak and earthy character. Very nice!

Another great score from Benchmark wines. I was lucky enough to get a more current vintage of this wine in February 2015. Happy to get this at a lesser price albeit still a nice wine!

Beautiful Malbec - full body, lots of character, still young, probably needs more time, but definitely age worthy! Coffee beans, mocha, milk chocolate covered cherry, vanilla, sandalwood. Layers of complexity! Needs time to open up. Velvety finish.

Bought this from Shafer upon release but is the first time I tried it. Although I still prefer the malbecs coming out of Argentina, this is still an excellent wine with several more years of life left.

1984 2014 Malbec - Elias Fernandez and Doug Shafer. This is a beautiful Malbec. Wow. Dark cherry and blackberry and blueberry fruit. Butter, butter, and more butter. Spicy vanilla chocolate bliss!!!!! A little cigar box and dark soilvThe finish is so silky smooth! I may drink the entire bottle myself...

Mar 6th, 2020Dark purple with light violet accents and a wide brim. An exciting and slightly exotic nose of wild blueberries, lavender, beautifully subtle herbs, and moist soil. No, this isn’t Cahors, nor is it Argentina. This is pure Napa and it wears that as a badge of honor. So silky smooth, with softer tannins and medium acidity, this isn’t nearly as big as it could be. Showing really nice balance, this isn’t hedonistic at all. Restrained and refined are the words that come to mind. Despite that restraint, there is power here. On the palate, black cherries and fresh blueberries are dominant with garden herbs and smoked meat are secondary. Spice and vanilla on the medium long finish. All these guys do is make great stuff.
