Duncan Savage
Western Cape Red Blend
CapeSomm blind tasting practice — guessed a Grenache/Cinsault/Syrah combo of some sort, which is true...in reverse. Lovely stuff.

Feb 26th, 2019Marked by a magic touch from one of South Africa’s “it-producers”; Duncan Savage. The 16 Savage Red is a Syrah based (81%) southern Rhône blend, large oak and plenty of love, hands off spot on is the recipe and the result is wonderful; Dense and concentrated fruit profile, with savory notes of cured meat and a granite like minerality. Drinks well already, but there is more to come int this one.

Jun 6th, 2018Clean, medium + intense, backhands at first but highly concentrated aromas that opens into a layered complexity with some air. A primary mix of red and black fresh fruit, raspberries, black plums, blueberries with a floral stroke of lavender over a very well defined savoury canvas of black olives, spice (juniper), wood (pine) and rocks.
Palate is dry with a medium + acidity. Tannins are high, but with a fruity and curved texture. Medium alcohol and a medium + body. Pronounced flavour intensity with characters of black fruit, spice, lavende that is evolving over a long finish.
Very good quality wine, still youthful but shows a very complex potential. With an evolving complexity and a high concentration. Still youthful, yet good balance with a intense fruit profile that carrress the tannins and a vibrant acidity that brings nerve to the wine. 9.3

Mar 30th, 2016Good, but goes down a little harsh and with more sour and crunch than I remember since I first tried a couple years ago. Pours with a brick filter draped over dark crimson. Beefy bloody notes hanging around with magic marker upfront, then averages itself out with fruits and herbs and becomes altogether a vibrant lighter thing. Little hints of iodine and violet - just barely.
