If I had any lingering doubts about this producer, this wine crushed them. I’m not a big white Rhone drinker, but this was bonkers. Opened with whiffs of pineapple, lychee, butter, vanilla, smoke and animal musk. Medium to light bodied, but the palate is long and mineral and reverberates through the finish, with acid that’s remarkable for a rhone white. Vibrant, fun, and natural; classic Souhaut.

Tangerine, white blossom, honeysuckle, ripe apricot, plum, baked quince and pear, orange oil. Dried mint and other herbs. Pale gold. Whole cluster, fermented in wooden tanks, aged on fine lees in used oak Barrique-ish for 8 months. Low acidity, medium plus length. Medium plus intensity. Phenolic bitterness. 70% Viognier, 30% Roussane.

If I have to drink Viognier, maybe this one. The roussanne provides a depth and waxiness that offsets the ripe tropical aromatics and fruit and makes the whole thing ok. I can hold two thoughts in my head at the same time: A) This is a cool wine;
B) I don't really like it.

If you like piña coladas and getting caught in the rain...there is no other way to say it other than you should have this in your white rotation whatever you are doing. Northern rhone white, including this very classic beauty, is always a good reminder that something very different, hedonic, and pleasureful is happening right now. And it doesn't need partners at the table. It just needs a glass. Acid, mineral, butter, a whiff of turkey, tropical fruits galore.
