Domaine Ponsot
Cuvée Vieilles Vignes Clos de la Roche Grand Cru Pinot Noir
On to the reds and a blind 90 Ponsot horizontal I’m surprising the boyz with. All served blind. First up is the CdlR VV, which we’ve all had many, many times. Dark reddish tawny with a perfumed nose. Notes of bing cherry, sweet rhubarb, some earth and some tantalizing spice. Silky, rich and opulent in the mouth. Coats everything it hits with a big blanket of fruit. Perfect balance of structure, acidity and fruit – all aging in harmony. Super long finish. (Bday 6 of 12)

Aug 1st, 2021Tour d’Argent. Tawny, heavy color in the glass. The Somm smiles. I smile. The room smiles. This is killer juice that opens with a fragrant bouquet of ripe bing cherries, earthly spice, some sois bois, and some Asian spice. I’ve had this wine probably 10+ times and this is easily the best of them. Silky smooth. The nose is sexual. Killer juice. Worth the price.

May 18th, 2019Tour d’Argent. The Cartes des Vins at TdA has been whittled away but this was still there. Boom. Deep, dark opaque and a little cloudy. But immediately the nose hits you. Ripe cherries, cranberry, earth/moist forest floor, and sois bois. Was amazing from the get go yet the last sip was the best. Exotic and rich. An all time red burg favorite.

Feb 23rd, 2019Reddish color with red bricking on the rims. Mostly opaque. A little redder and denser than the 90 Dujac CdlR by its side. Its nose was powerful. Notes of cherry cola, rhubarb, soil and spice. Very masculine in style when compared to the Dujac. Hearty, intense, and long finish. Grew and grew in complexity with air. Amazing wine.

Jul 22nd, 20171990 Ponsot Clos de la Roche. Lunch at KE&BK’s house. Decanted and needed a good hour before it even started to open up. Much better at 1.5-2 hour mark.

Jan 8th, 2021Magnum 1990 Ponsot Clos de la Roche. Decanted. Excellent. Great to drink this before the ‘82 Pichon Longueville, which was epic.

Jul 18th, 20181990 Clos de LA Roche. Second red of the evening during dinner at Katsuya w K, McC, DS, Judy. So good. DS preferred this to the 1996 Clos de Vougeot. It was awesome.
