Domaine Michel Magnien
Vieilles Vignes Vosne-Romanée Pinot Noir
On the Lawn at Tanglewood this evening with the Boston Pops Orchestra. Our Pops conductor Keith Lockhart is leading a live-to-picture performance of Star Wars: A New Hope, a showing of the classic 1977 film, with the Orchestra performing Mr. Williams’ iconic score.
For live-to-picture productions, the orchestra performs the entire movie score in real time as the film unspools. (Vocals, dialogue and effects are isolated from the original music track.)
Generally we get to hear Star Wars scores a couple times per season here at Tanglewood, but tonight we get a chance to hear them with the backdrop of the movie (Episode IV) that launched a franchise, to say the least!
I celebrated another full trip around the sun, since my coming into this world, earlier this week. Tonight my wife, some dear friends and me will be enjoying some enticing wines along with our movie night. So notes...maybe, but I'll try!

The wine is a pure expression of its terroir thanks to its élevage in a combination of used oak and clay jars. The wine shows ripe and fresh red-fruit aromas on the nose with Asian spice and rose petals. Medium weight and moderate tannins follow on the palate with a concentration of flavor that is typical of old vines and wholecluster fermentation. They say Michael Magnien follows the rhythm of moons synodic revolution at each stage.

Expressive nose of cranberry, raspberry, cherry with underlying spice notes of nutmeg, allspice, and even cumin.
Palate follows with much of the same fresh fruit with medium acidity and med+ tannin. Quite tasty now but maybe a little rough around the edges.
This was part of our blind '14 VR tasting and was my favorite. It had the most expressive fruit of the bunch and the way the spice notes were layered in was quite nice. It was a bit polarizing though because the tannin quality was a bit courser than the others. Lovely stuff overall though, for my palate anyway.
