Domaine Michel Lafarge
Volnay Pinot Noir
I was somewhat skeptical opening this. ‘09s, in my experience, range from lacking complexity to soft, lush, and monochromatic, with a dab of everything in between. This was a gorgeous fit for braised lamb with spring veggies and black lentils. The nose is definitely subdued, this is not explosively aromatic Volnay, but its savory and mouth-filing character make up for it. Theres a lovely sense of animal to the wine, there’s leaves, clove, toasted sandalwood, and this sweet licorice note that underline a gorgeous core of red currants and cherry. The umami and lovely fruit character are further postured by slightly imposing tannin, tannins that don’t impede drinking but beg for a little food to accompany them. That being said, this was really gorgeous with dinner and a couple hours to slowly open. Yet another reminder that its easy to pick apart Burgundy out of context (food) but when it hits, damn it hits the spot.

Mar 5th, 2019A fine burgundy near its prime. Some residual fruit (including medicinal/herbal) but also the emergence of secondary flavors; hint of leather. $109.99. Tasty but at this price point may look elsewhere.

Sep 12th, 2021Hardened for 2009 - gorgeous color but rustic and barnyard to an extreme. Requires time outside and inside of the bottle.

Apr 20th, 2018Sweet and generous fruit in soft and round texture. Lovely. The ripe vintage fruit almost reminds me of a Williams Selyem Russian River style.
