Domaine Marcel Deiss
Burg Bergheim Alsace Riesling Blend
There are excellent wines, and then there are magical wines. But some fewer still are singular and peerless, unique in their bearing, composition and inspiration. Such is the case with Burg. A stupefying field blend that harnesses everything that Alsace might be or become and transmutes it into something akin to watching the evening sun burst through a technicolor stained glass window on high. An all-encompassing blend of Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir, Sylvaner, Muscat d'Alsace (white and red), Muscat à Petit Grain, Riesling, Gewurtztraminer, Traminer, Chasselas, and Chasselas Rose. This old bottle yielded wine the color of amber, smelling like candied orange peel, beeswax, and dried yellow flowers. Silky flavors of citrus rind, bergamot, honeysuckle and candle wax mix with still-excellent acidity and a stony underbelly that lingers through the candied-mandarin-rind finish. Slightly to moderately sweet. A wine of meditation to be sure.

Dec 25th, 2016Wilson dinner 11/15/21. What an interesting wine, as might be expected from Deiss from what I’ve read. Nose is just beautiful, honeyed yet stony, ripe fruited yet laced with acids, and what lift and wildness balanced with elegance. Yum. Mabel loved it and paired great with Wilson’s seafood mix.

Nov 16th, 2021Another field blend, but this is more rich and opulent. Slightly off dry with a hint of botrytis. Excellent.

Jan 9th, 2021Lovely. A field blend of Riesling, Pinot Gris and Gewurztraminer. You can pick out elements of all three. Noticeable botrytis. Slightly off dry. Went great with a spicy Asian fish soup. The fish was Barramundi.

Nov 16th, 2020Deep yellow in the glass - almost could mistake it for a dessert wine. Deliciously well balanced with some tropical white fruit along with medium acid and a long finish. Nice body and mouthfeel. A nice wine.
