This was about at prototypical “Burgundy” as I could imagine. Everything seemed to be in the right place. Truck loads of red and blue forest fruits with some celery root, all wrapped in a velvet glove with enough acid and tannin for the long haul.

2020 September. I approached this with some trepidation as the last bottle (opened a few years back) was hard, tart and weedy. I find some reactions to the 2004 vintage character overblown, but this wine had lived down to the stereotype. This bottle, though, was different - the greenness had melted into a rather open, fairly complex and rich wine which more than hinted at its origins. Dark berries, spice, game, etc. So perhaps that mean green thing was just a very long and very awkward middle phase after all. I have one more bottle, and it’ll be very interesting to see where this ends up in a several more years. I’d say the same for my other remaining 2004s.
