Domaine des Orchis (Philippe Héritier)
Quintessence de Mondeuse
Deep, brambly, dark berry fruit on the nose, dark flowers, blueberry, pine resin, alpine flowers and so much more. Awesome alpine nose. Amazing tangy and juicy blackberry fruit. Rustic tannins but somewhat refined. Delicious. So juicy and alive. Terrific.
24 hour update - so juicy and compact on the palate. Stunning freshness and depth. Awesome. 9.2 to 9.3.

Like a mountain wild jelly donut on the nose. Flowers, big blackberry fruit, some funk, extreme minerals as is the house style here at Orchis. Wide and expansive. Some hint of hoisin and bbq sauce. Man, do these wines perform above their price points. Just sick. Super juicy with terrific berry fruit and slathered in minerals. Like a Gamay/Syrah cross but screams Savoie. Mondeuse, baby. Big wild Mondeuse tannins. Very fresh. Rustic as Mondeuse can get but utterly charming and always wins me over. Really long. This could be. 9.3. Air will tell.

May 12th, 2021It’s always fun to taste something 10 months later after you have tasted it only in the cellar. It’s quite a moment. Anyway this is even better now than it was 10 months ago. Superb nose. Wild berries, alpine flowers, intense minerality, violets, lavender, just gorgeous, also a bit wild and feral. Palate is classic Mondeuse with terrific grip, concentration and a wild rustic yet still linear side. Energy for days, ripe and grippy tannins and a knockout finish that keeps pumping.

Dec 13th, 2019Big, deep purple fruit, on the nose, foresty, mint, mineral, elegant, silly great nose, juicy and so clean with huge purple fruit flavors and amazing purity and huge huge minerals. Tastes so mineral and rocky, complex and so delicious with terrific acidity and freshness. So long and so fresh. One of the most mineral driven Mondeuse I’ve ever had. Inner mouth aromas. Amazing freshness and minerality is the tale here with all the that juicy crackling dark Mondeuse fruit. Structure for long aging.

Nov 7th, 2023Youch. Just not my thing at all. All I get is a big mouthful of tannin and unripe dark fruit.

Jan 9th, 2023A bit thin for me but interesting. Almond on the finish.

Aug 14th, 2021Intriguing, beguiling red, ruby barely opaque w/evolving nose of blackberry and plum Gummy Bear, a lift (maybe Alpine?) but def hi-toned note, herby Ricola, devious spice, medicinal & forest floor, floral. Needs food, played well w/duck breast. Med weight & med acidity. As @Lyle Fass mentioned: Gamay-esque, also reminded me of Lagrein. Killed this bottle in no time. Unique & esoteric variety, thanks Lyle
