young still. Blue fruit and dark cherry. Meaty midpalate with a whiff of black olive and dark plum. Lucid and delicious.

Very refined. Displays celery inflection oft associated with 2011. As the wine becomes deeper and richer with air, any less desirable inflection is negligible. Excellent wine in a mediocre vintage.

The 2002 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Saint-Jacques 1er Cru is just a tiny bit smudged on the nose, but it rectifies that with aeration, offering disarming brambly red fruit, bergamot and potpourri scents, just a slight ferrous tincture in the background. The palate is fine-boned with pure red fruit, structured and slightly disjointed initially. Yet it coheres magnificently in the glass, so smooth. I was shocked when the vintage was revealed because this bottle suggests a very slow evolution. Wonderful. Tasted blind at the Wallace brothers' Xmas dinner. (Neal Martin, Vinous, March 2023)

Very good, and delicious, but not a great CSJ.

Lovely dark fruit. Fresh and supple. All dark stuff with games tangy notes. This is a great and classic bottle. Usually the WOTN, but alongside the Chambertin and the Beze it seems a touch simple. However this is fucking awesome. It’s just a tad shorter

The 2016 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Saint-Jacques 1er Cru is blessed with a bouquet of real pedigree: very complex mixture of red and black brambly fruit, sous-bois, crushed stone and rose petal aromas. The harmony and delineation is outstanding. The palate is medium-bodied with supple, pliant tannins that lend this Clos Saint-Jacques symmetry and poise. Fresh and vibrant, it never relinquishes any of its breeding and tension. The finish is persistent and utterly captivating. Fabulous. Tasted blind at the 2016 Burgfest tasting. (neal Martin, Vinous, October 2019)

Light tawny color. Great nose. Notes of cherry, rhubarb, dried flowers, brown spice, earth and gravel. Refined in the mouth. A bit tight, even with many hours of air. Yet great balance and class in the mouth and finish. We got more and more excited about this wine as it got into hours 6 and 7... it needed the air to blossom.
