Oct 27th, 2023Very reductive on open, as Mencia can be. Some tar. But in time ripe plums, cherry, and ripe but transparent fruit emerges. Cherry tart and patisserie flavors. Nice gentle extraction- almost a light grenache character.

Oct 6th, 2022The red fruit is wrapped in hints of blood, slate, smoke. Well integrated oak, good moment of consumption and going strong. Great wine

Nov 11th, 2021Deep, brilliant violet. Powerful red and blue fruit aromas show sharp delineation and pick up suave floral and exotic spice nuances with aeration. Juicy and densely packed, offering appealingly sweet boysenberry and cherry flavors that show a hint of gaminess, underscored by a vein of smoky minerality. Shows solid, spicy thrust on the impressively long finish, which is given shape by smooth, polished tannins. (Josh Raynolds, Vinous, June 2021)

Dark Ruby in colour. Lifted aromatics showing red fruits (Barb thought red plum) raspberry, liquorice and a tobacco note. Same coming through on the savoury palate with a lovely fluid mouth feel. I have always loved the Mencia grape from Bierzo from the first time I tried it. Interestingly made by Alvaro Palacios who shot to fame in Priorat with his high priced “L’Ermite”. I recommend you watch the Documentary on Priorat.

Jul 17th, 2020The 2014 ‘Villa de Corullon’ by Bodega Palacios is a superb showing from this storied Bierzo estate. Sourced 50-100 year old Mencia vines from the municipality of Corullon, just south of San Martin, this incredible new wine shows really good aromatic range, from white pepper and vegetal tones to black tea, black currant purée and exotic spices that all are marvelously woven together in the glass. Beautifully textured, the wine shows off a soft and inviting mouthfeel. Chinese black tea, wild blackberry preserves and suggestions of pipe tobacco and leather all come together on the palate. Hugely enjoyable in its youth, this outstanding wine will cellar well for the next fifteen years. Drink 2019-2035- 93

Jun 22nd, 2019Rich crimson in colour. Ultra savoury on nose and palate - lacking the fruit it had a few years ago - still with M+ acidity and M- Tannins. Aromas of rose petals, earth and gravel. Have loved the Mencia grape from the first time I tasted it. It has the ability to produce flavoursome dry reds from old low yielding hillside plots on poor schist dominated soils. One of the 1001 Wines.
