Gimblett Gravels Vineyard Syrah
A gift from the Sommelier st the Downs Club. Mid crimson with purple edges showing its youth. Fresh red cherries, showing its youth again, on the nose. The palate shows that cherry fruit again with lots of spice and a little white pepper. Barely medium weight. The Gimblett Gravels weaving its magic again for Syrah. I’ve always been a big fan of Trinity Hill from this district. This isn’t as full bodied but just as classy. Best in show for Syrah at the Decanter World Wine Awards. In summary - elegant and fine boned.

GIMBLETT GRAVELS VINEYARD
A PLACE OF WARMTH AND GRAVELLY SOILS
Hawke's Bay
39˚ 35' 57.2"S 176˚ 44' 5.6"E
The Gimblett Gravels Winegrowing District resulted from a flood in 1876 when the Ngaruroro River changed its course and a vista of gravel was left behind. The area is a place of warmth, stone and sandy alluvial soils. This unique combination alongside other climatic factors such as sunshine hours, humidity and rainfall means the gravels retain heat and lead to optimum ripening for Syrah, Merlot and Cabernet. The stylistic characters of red wines from the vineyard are richness, ripeness and elegance with a distinctive fine dusty tannin finish. Chardonnay is also grown on the vineyard with distinctive floral notes and pronounced minerality on the palate.

Full of spices. Thick purple hue, woody, black pepper, slight cinnamon, black olive, blackberry, black currant. dry, mid+ firm acidity and mid tannin. mid bitterness. Dense but structured and dry style give slightly more alcoholic image than actual 13% but within good balance. Can drink now and can age more to harmonise. ABV13%

Apr 28th, 2017Sweet, ripe blue fruits, black plums, plums , blackberries, pepper, darker minerals, stones, violets & lavender on the nose. Palate fruits are the same as the nose. They are rich, full, round, lush and fully ripe. Light candies black licorice, moist rich black earth with a little crushed stones, liquid violet, lavender, silky soft tannins, nice round mellow acidity and a nice finish that is consistent and doesn't fade. Made to enjoy early.

Apr 19th, 2017Slightly disappointing bottle (and vintage?) compared to earlier vintages I've had. A bit tired, although it benefited from spending some time in the glass.

Jan 15th, 2016This is a special bottle for me. I traveled to New Zealand and was fortunate enough to have a tour and tasting at Craggy Range. It brings back great memories opening this bottle. It's delicious, complex, peppery, and reminds me of great times in NZ. I highly recommend their wines and visiting the winery.
