Concannon Vineyard
San Francisco Bay Petite Sirah
Dark inky in color with a purplish rim.
Strong nose of blackberries, sweet cherries, black currants, oak, vanilla, spices, vegetables, chocolates, barnyard and black pepper.
Full bodied and soft with medium acidity and nice legs.
Dry on the palate with sweet plums, cooked cherries, oak, vanilla, cloves, tobacco, coffee, chocolates, peppercorn, spices and earth.
Medium minus on the finish with fine grained tannins and tangy raspberries.
This 3 year old Californian Petite Sirah is still drinking nicely, although simple. Well-balanced with a soft mouthfeel, which wasn't there a year ago.
Needs an hour to open up. Good by itself or with food. I paired it with a cheese plate.
13.5% alcohol by volume.
$14.

Sep 20th, 2017This is a nice wine and really a good value. Fruit is somewhat subdued, though raspberry and dark berry are pronounced. Spicy, firm tannin, quite a bit more assertive than the prior vintage.

Berries and slight spice - medium bodied. Slightly effervescent... maybe some secondary fermentation going on?

1 person found it helpfulJun 16th, 2016Historic and once-famous Livermore winery, Concannon was bought and sold several times in the 1980's by large conglomerates, resulting in a loss of focus, and the brand suffered. In 1992 Eric Wente saved it from the jaws of destruction with a group of 8 investors to buy the winery. A blend of 90% Petite Sirah and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon with aromas of dark fruit and floral spice. Flavors of blackberry and plum with soft spice, good balance, fine tannins on a medium finish. Tasting Sample.

Jul 9th, 2017Dark inky in color with a dark purple rim.
Fruity nose of blackberries, bell pepper, black plums, cherries, wood, licorice, spices, dark chocolates, smoke, coffee, barnyard, tar, vegetables, wet leaves and peppercorn.
Medium to full bodied, with medium plus acidity and nice legs.
Dry on the palate with blackberries, plums, cherries, currants, oak, spices, vegetables, vanilla, tar, green pepper, pencil lead, chocolates, tobacco, spices, bitter herbs and peppercorn.
Medium finish with fine grained tannins and tangy cherries.
This Californian Petite Sirah is much better now than a year ago. Not as good as the 2013, but it's starting to drink nicely by itself.
Balanced with medium complexity, and a nice mouthfeel.
Still has lots of vegetable notes, and needs another couple of years in the bottle to remove that. Very earthy and green on the nose.
Needs 90 minutes to open up properly and show some tannins.

Fruity nose of blackberries, blueberries, red currants, cherries, licorice, tart strawberries, earth, oak, vanilla, acetone, chocolates, smoke, barnyard and black pepper.

Dry and fruity on the palate with blackberries, black currants, cherries, plums, wood, bell pepper, bitter herbs, tobacco, dirt, light vanilla and peppercorn.
Short finish with green tannins and tart strawberries.
A young, Californian Petite Sirah, that needs a couple of years in the bottle to mature.
Not very balanced as of yet, but pretty good with a piece of steak. Needs at least 2 hours to open up.
I had the 2013 a few months ago, and it was much more approachable.
