Château Trotanoy
Pomerol Red Bordeaux Blend
Opened and double decanted earlier in the day. This was my first Troty and wow, did this ever make an impression on me. The 1966 pours a pale garnet with a touch of orange but good color still. Predominately red fruited, with sandalwood, tobacco, burnt toast, well-oiled leather ball glove, and earth; truly fascinating stuff. And then, on the palate, it gets even better. It’s structured still and almost made me tear up it was so beautiful. This is a profoundly emotional wine and a true gift to behold in 2024. Drink now because this is special.

Dec 2nd, 2024The 2014 Trotanoy has a more complex bouquet than the 2014 Gazin, with more Pomerol DNA in the mix, iron-tinged red berry fruit, black truffle and cedar. Fine delineation and quintessentially Pomerol. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins and harmonious, soy-tinged black fruit with white pepper sprinkled over the finish. This has personality and class but needs time (comme d'habitude). One of the standouts in what is an inconsistent Pomerol vintage. Tasted blind at the Southwold 10-Year-On tasting. (Neal Martin, Vinous, March 2024)

Pure lifted fruit. Dense. Violets, inky fruit, dark plum. Pure and restrained with a salinity and detailed edges. Very good but young.

Oct 20th, 2023I brought this. Dark reddish tawny, almost opaque. Notes of black cherries, earth, smoke and hickory wood, some red sweet fruit. In the mouth this is rich and palate-coating with lots going on. Silky. Really good showing.

Feb 19th, 2023Turned earth, blackberry, graphite, roasted red pepper. Well structured tannins still tight.

Dec 5th, 2022Dark tawny, regal in its color. Silky, killer nose. Notes of black fruit, dark earth, cassis and leather saddle, some barrel toast. Tannins resolved as this coats what it touches in the mouth. Really nicely made wine. Guessed 82 Lynch Bages.

Oct 16th, 2021Tasted blind. Dark reddish amber color. Almost opaque. Herbal, powerful nose. Notes of dark fruit, tobacco leaf, pepper, some mushrooms and some camphor. Massive fruit and structure. Seems young and still has some pucker. Expands in the mouth. Really good juice... the mouth feel is outstanding. (M's 60th bday 7th of 14)

May 23rd, 2021First 2000 I really like, black fruit, lead pencil, very delineated, has another 20 years to go.

Dec 31st, 2020The 1970 Trotanoy is a wine that I have encountered several times and – caveat emptor – it is variable and prone to TCA issues. This bottle initially sports a metallic note on the nose, although it dissipates to reveal engaging scents of dark berry fruit, undergrowth and the hint of traditional Japanese green tea that I have noted before. Perhaps it does not quite deliver the precision of the best bottles I have come across. The palate is structured and tannic – a “serious” Trotanoy that is determined to impress despite a touch of rusticity. This is a broad-shouldered, rather stocky Trotanoy with impressive depth and just a hint of black olive on the long finish. It will not improve with cellaring but it remains a great Pomerol that has tasted so well for almost half a century. Tasted at Fook Lam Moon in Hong Kong. (Neal Martin, Vinous, December 2019)
