Château Sociando-Mallet
Haut-Médoc Red Bordeaux Blend
Man, fruit is still vibrant, bright bing cherries and a little bit of smoke and ash.

Jun 2nd, 2018High shoulder fill. Cork just short of being completely saturated. Poured into glasses about an hour prior; consumed over a three hour period. Color is a dark garnet with maybe the slightest hint of bricking on the edge. Intoxicating aromas of crème de cassis, tobacco, cedar, baking spices, and forest floor. On the palate, the fruit was remarkably fresh and vibrant for 35 years of age. Zippy, black currants, plums, leather and a touch of earth. Tannins are still holding fast! Finish lasts for a minute, plus. Stunning bottle. Honestly, it’s hard to think of a producer in Bordeaux that punches this far above its class. There was more than enough structure for this to easily go another 10 years...maybe even longer. Wow.

Favorite value bordeaux. 83 drinking great right now. Dusty. Still maintains nice fruit and acid.

May 11th, 2015Compared to the 1983 I had a few months back, this was downright tired. If you like very savory wines this had some nice roasted peppers and roasted coffee balanced by some tart cherries. But I really missed the fresh blueberry and savory spice hedonism of the first bottle I had! Bottle variation alert.

Sep 13th, 2015Where to start describing this? Deep garnet with a ruby core, this was extremely complex, intense but transparent, full-bodied, still very fresh and alive, and has developed awesomely. Strange to say this about a 32-year old wine, but I loved the balance between the primary flavors (more than I expected: fresh blackberries, blueberries, red cherries, and chalky dust) and secondary and tertiary ones (roasted coffee, cinnamon, smoke, burnt earth, black tea, cured meat, and cracked black pepper). I still felt some tannins, but they were silky and seamless, and the full body felt rich but effortless, which supported it all. And a nice surprise: this hasn't thrown much of a deposit, so there was quite little wasted.
