Minervois Carignan

Minervois is a real standby at a lot of casual bars and bistro in Paris and it's been so for me since I first experienced that. Like Aglianico in Italy, it's a relatively reliable choice on most wine lists if you need to keep things reasonable. A little heavier and definitely less austere, though, the Mediterranean summer's of Languedoc generally ensure approachable, full and open wines. Cassis, leather and ripe blackberry on the nose, longs legs and flavors of dark fruit, baked apples, vanilla with a hint of nutmeg on the easy finish. Try with roast chicken and earth mushrooms or a spinach spanakopita.

Really nice, and drinkable right now. Probably has 2 more years in it. Light mushrooms, and light-medium tannin. The description says "paprika, allspice, cranberries", but that's all a lie. Still, very nice.

The wine aged well, but the flavors faded pretty quickly after opening.

Solid red. Nothing flashy. It’s got a nice nose, raspberry fruit, quite tannic. Sharp-edged finish but it’s not harsh.
