Château Le Gay
Pomerol Red Bordeaux Blend
It is time for some Merlot on this #MerlotThursday. Let's bring Merlot back!
Dark ruby in color with a reddish rim.
Great nose with red and black fruits, cedar, vanilla, leather, earth, chocolates, tobacco, spices, black pepper and black tea.
Full-bodied and elegant with medium acidity.
Dry on the palate with black plums, cooked cherries, currants, vanilla, cola, cedar, licorice, chocolates, tobacco, herbs, spices and earth.
Long finish with fine grained tannins and tangy cherries.
This is a delicious 20 year old Merlot from Bordeaux. Nicely balanced with a nice, soft mouthfeel. Rich and elegant with nice complexity.
Easy drinking and needs an hour of airtime to open up properly.
The 2004 was not a good vintage, but it is showing really well now.
Robert Parker 93 points.
Good by itself as a sipping wine, or with foods like game meats.
A blend of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc.
13.5% alcohol by volume.
92 points.
$220.

Dark purple. Plum and blackberry on the inviting nose. Lush, full-bodied palate confirms the nose adding light graphite. Medium acidity and velvety medium tannins. As before, an excellent example of an excellent year from a top tier appellation. What's not to love? Drink now through 2029 or so.

Jan 31st, 2023Dark purple garnet with near black core and color to the rim. Inviting nose of ashy blueberry and dried flowers. Full-bodied palate yields blueberry, plum, and ripe blackberry, with a hint of graphite and violet mid-palate on. Medium acidity and subtle, medium minus tannins. Finish is lengthy and continues the palate. A great intro to the upper echelons of Pomerol for the novice. Checks off all of the boxes except long term ageability (which, of course, is why it's not La Violette). Drink now through 2026.

Jul 20th, 2022Really lovely perfume. Plum, violets, a hint of tobacco and tar. On the palate fresh and savory with quite a lot of the grip of youth. This has a long way ahead but is a very good wine.

Apr 3rd, 2020Very dark and intense. Like pure cool fruit essence but a savory and aged thing. Some secondary notes. Almost inky. Very pure, quite thick then chalky. Excellent. 70 years old? No way.. that is crazyFrom mag.

Feb 5th, 2020A blend of 90% Merlot & 10% Cab Franc, aged in 100% new oak, aromas of red/black fruits, blossom and sweet spices. On the youthful palate, flavors of blackberry and black cherry jump out of the glass but took a bit of coaxing to notice subtle flavors lavender and leather. Soft and chewy tannins, long finish ending with racy fruit and sweet vanilla spice, well balanced drink over next couple of decades.

Aug 28th, 2019Say what you want about Michel Rolland, but this exudes sooooo much character and is becoming a secondary stud! Killer fruit profile with damp earthen elements at its core. Shares some of the same blue clay soils as it's neighbor (Chateau Petrus!). Thank you to Marcelo and Henri Parent for hosting me and my wife for our stay in Pomerol at the estate!!!
