Cassoulet wine. Couldn't imagine a better choice. Drinkable, but too much substance to be gulpable. Plenty of acid to cut the fat, and just on the threshold of tertiary development, so it's simultaneously developed and youthful. Cabernet/merlot-based wines, much like people, really shouldn't be drunk at less than ten years of age.

A vintage always overlooked and almost ready.

Pleasantly surprised. Good depth of dark fruit still there. Decent structure. Not wow, but a very tasty drink.

Perhaps a perfect example of what inexpensive "Old World" Bordeaux was all about. It's a great pity so few modern wine drinkers will ever be introduced to the joy of a classic traditional Haut-Medoc.

Served with a braised lamb shank that was simmered in a Marsala/Port/beef stock. I'm a lucky man...a few more bottles still in the cellar.
