From a nice old-looking bottle that had a mid shoulder fill. Solid branded cork and seal. Dark tawny color, mostly translucent with clear rims. Soft delicate nose. Notes of dark berries, old cedar box, gravel, mocha and old saddle leather. In the mouth this comes across as a bit fruit-faded, no tannins. This bottle was past it's prime and fun to try, but I would hope there are better samples of it still out there to be had.

Given the reputation of the wine I could not wait to try it... And it is an animal. Wild and gamey, bacon smoked by lapsang souchong. What an experience.

An auction bottle, with a top shoulder fill and an appropriate cork. Brownish red and translucent in the glass, with brickish rims. Barnyard funk in the nose, gravel, wood, dirt, old Bordeaux fruit and some cassis. Med finish. Evolved over many hours in the glass. At the end we debated if it was slightly corked or if that was just an element of this old Haut Brion that was ok. A great experience. Not as good as the 59 or 61. But a memorable showing at our first 2016 tasting.

55 vintage has it going on. Dark cherry, leather, cigar. To say the least, that was a treat.
