Château Haut-Bages Libéral
le Haut-Medoc Red Bordeaux Blend
Dark ruby, garnet. Abundant nose of black, cherry and soft cranberry. Medium, full palate, echoes the nose adding a slight hint of graphite. Medium acidity, medium tannins, medium long finish. The third label of HBL is an excellent left bank from a classic vintage at a great price. Drink now through 2028.

Feb 22nd, 2023Le Haut - Medoc de Haut Bages Liberal is the third label of the well known 5th growth Pauillac, Château Haut-Bages Liberal. This is a great example of a Bordeaux sub $25 that drinks well in its price range. Notes of black fruits, dried tocacco, and cedar pour out of the bowl of the glass. On the pallet is a wonderful orchestration of black currant, graphite, minerals, fine tannin integration, and oak aging. This is a great expression of Cabernet Sauvignon, most likely due to a fantastic, once in a century growing year that produced top notch fruit. I tasted this at a young age, but I think this wine, due to its good acidity and structure, could age for several more years and maintain its youth.
I paired this with a New York Strip, sautéed kale and garlic, and cilantro lime rice; a successful pairing indeed!

Now biodynamic and aged in 40% new oak. Deep Ruby, still young with aromas of black and red fruits with floral notes. On the palate blackberry and dark cherry flavors with notes of lavender, tobacco and pronounced chalky notes. Firm full tannins, long finish ending with fruit, very elegant. Let this one sit in the bottle for at least 5 years!

Sep 27th, 2015Oh - wow! Smooth operator as Sade herself would sing. A near perfect finish, complex and mature red fruit and that incredible French terroir on the palette. Perfect on the nose. This one will only get better with age!

Apr 5th, 2021A fine example of Big Bordeaux bliss! A good hearty blend - strong on the nose with the initial French terroir on tap, followed by that traditional tobacco noted finish. All together it’s a muted experience, so likely needs a decanting to bring this out - but still enjoyable without!
