Château Climens
Asphodele Sec Sémillon
100% Semillon. Star bright yellow gold. Inviting nose of baked quince and dried yellow flowers. Complex medium-bodied palate echoes the nose adding layers of dried pineapple (without the sugar), lanolin, and tennis shoes. Medium minus acidity means this wine can sit with spicier fare than the typical Bordeaux, but still hold its own with traditional “white wine” fare. Moderate finish. With no Sauvignon Blanc this is not your typical Bordeaux Blanc. The extra weight and lower acidity means you can take it to more “Chardonnay-ish” places than usual. Southwest Asian fare did well for me. Drink now through 2025.

Apr 22nd, 2021Revisiting this beauty. So pretty, so floral, so delectable. Light straw with the faintest little hints of green flecks with thin edges. 100% Sémillon and you can tell instantly. Beautiful aromatics of pears with a streak of honey. Almond slivers and dainty white flowers. Summer in full bloom from a novel set in the English countryside. Clementines and wet stones with a bit of licorice saying hello. I’ve said it before about this wine, it’s ethereal.
A dry white wine from Chateau Climens so obviously it has to be delicious. Well balanced and welcome acidity. Salinity and minerality for days. It’s a smooth pour that relaxes you and takes you elsewhere, anywhere but here. The palate is just a joy as the nose repeats here, pears, lemon zest, and pineapple. A touch of oak just for good measure. Medium long finish with a smidgeon of sweetness. I’ll just quote myself from last year with this wine: “ Soft but rich. Evocative yet subtle.”

100% dry Semillon from Barsac. Coming from one of the great Sauternes houses, this has to be magnificent right? Of course it is. Pale lemon in the glass with a floral perfumed nose. Lemon zest, lychee, and green apple get the party started with pears and honeysuckle coming to play. The honey, the straw, the brioche bread, all so lovely and so deep. Such an exciting, ethereal nose.
Lovely is the word of the day here. This is a mood invoking wine. Soft but rich. Evocative yet subtle. The acidity is crisp and the mouthfeel silky. The palate displays nice orchard fruits and a touch of stone minerality. Very saline, very correct, and magnificently pure. Spring in a bottle. A very unique, fun wine and I cannot get enough.

Château Climens’s Bérénice Lurton collaborated with Pascal Jolivet (best known for Sancerre wines) to produce a beautifully complex, dry Bordeaux Blanc made exclusively from the Semillon variety. This dry product is a shift from the famously sweet wines made by Château Climens in the Barsac region.
The wine is pale lemon. At first blush, the nose offers powerful citrus and orchard-fruit notes such as meyer lemon, orange peel, and green apple notes. Also delicate notes of white blossom and cherry blossom. On the palate, the wine comes alive with honeyed characters and orange blossom. It has richness and notes of croissant, cream, and brioche from aging 8 months on the lees. The finish is medium(+) and while this youthful wine is drinking well now, I believe it could age.
Château Climens, Asphodele, Bordeaux Blanc. Vintage 2018. ABV 13%.
@Delectable Wine - this wine is 100% Semillon. Cheers!
