Home sweet home. After a great week of skiing and outdoors activities in Austria I wanted to sip on something familiar. 2014 is the year we got married and I always like to stock up on this underwhelming vintage, especially wines from the Chanfreau family, whom we know personally, and whose wines are rather better than average in this vintage. This one I hadn't tried yet. It's true to type with tar, blackcurrant, soy sauce, forest soil, cedar, cigar and pan-fried mushrooms. The palate is all about umami... good acid drive, black currant and soy sauce, good width, a bit of matter, a soft mouthfeel, almost silky, that gives way to a big bowl of a midpalate which leaves a tannic layer all over a long, powerful and quite complex finish with blackcurrant, tobacco, soy sauce and a nice tiny bitter note, along with that drying effect. It's a good, well balanced, bordeaux in a lesser vintage. Give it an hour of air to help it settle as there was a bit of funk, wild gamey notes at first.

Will be better in a few years. Nice notes of black currant and cherry on the nose. Quite fruity and oaky with a nice finish, but oddly bland midway through.
