Château Carbonnieux
Grand Cru Classé de Graves Pessac-Léognan White Bordeaux Blend
Perhaps, were it not for Burgundy, the world’s finest white wines would be those of Bordeaux, with Pessac and Graves instead of Puligny and Chassange. With the increasing cost and scarcity of those latter wines, however, us lovers of Bordeaux Blanc can enjoy wines like this 2012 Carbonnieux with a smug smile across our faces. This is a gorgeous wine, complex but oh-so-drinkable, with plenty of tertiary attraction but totally fresh and vibrant at the same time. The aromas of burnt butter, Seville orange, macadamia nut, peach and vanilla only intensify on the palate, with mouthwatering salinity and great concentration, and a lovely note of bitter lemon on the long, graceful finish. This is a white wine of great clarity, poise and confidence, and just embarrassingly good value. Enjoyed with pork loin and Dijon mustard.
