Château Calon-Ségur
Le Marquis Saint-Estèphe Red Bordeaux Blend
I'm an big fan of Calon Segur, and now too of their second wine. An open and giving wine, it combines plum, blueberry, chocolate box, leather, tobacco, spice in a generous style. Decent grip from thanking and a soft velvet structure make for an enjoyable experience where one sip easily follows with the next.

Jan 2nd, 20232014 vintage. Drinking nicely now. Still plenty of grip but starting to soften/pretty up slightly.

Oct 28th, 2021If you know me then you know how much I love the second wines from prestigious labels. Such is this one. Medium purple with light cherry accents and a thin rim. An immediately delightful nose showcasing black currant, blueberries, and black pepper. French oak and Herbes de Provence. Forest floor and gravel provide such joy on the nose and ending with some powerful tobacco aromas.
You probably know the original Calon Segur and what a benchmark they are for Left Bank Bordeaux. This offers a taste of the original at much more reasonable prices. 67/33 Merlot/Cabernet Sauvignon. In the bang for your buck category this really does rise far above so many other similarly priced bottles.
Really nice balance and structure throughout. Classy and serious but with an ever present sense of playfulness. The palate is deep and generous. Warm spice and stewed plums initially. Blackberries are dominant here with a touch of vanilla. Moderately long finish with more oak. Really really nice stuff. Perfect for any occasion
