From magnum on Thanksgiving. Unfortunately I broke the cork and had to decant through cheese cloth, which I was really trying to avoid with a twelve year old Crianza. Ended up drinking beautifully and was very well received. Layered with mature red fruit, dried berries, game, tobacco, and vanilla. Maybe a kiss of bret? Acid and tannin still very much intact though the sediment is significant and after several hours the wine becomes a victim of oxygen. Have had this in the cellar for several years and caught the right large format occasion. Pop ‘em if you’ve got ‘em.

Dark red. Spice-tinged red berry and cherry scents are complemented by hints of coconut and succulent herbs. Shows good energy and cut on the palate, offering oak-spiced bitter cherry and red currant flavors and a tangy suggestion of blood orange. Dusty tannins frame a long, nervy finish that leaves a subtle floral quality behind. (Josh Raynolds, Vinous, April 2021)

Serious Crianza with dark, powerful, brooding fruit and immense concentration. Very even and ripe tannins, revealing sweet, spicy and vanillin American oak. Fairly subtle and restrained aromatics even with quite a bit of air- cassis and blackberry aromatics with leather and tobacco. I would have a hard time not calling this Left Bank or old school Napa Cabernet in a blind tasting, but the American oak is a point of distinction. Love the supple mid palate which is revealing more freshness and bright red currant qualities. Peciña is a favorite of mine so the quality of this bottling comes as no surprise, but the extraction is quite robust for such a young style. I would love to see this again in another 2-3 years once the baby fat has shed a bit. By no means a delicate style of Crianza, but has ample acid and enough fruit and structure to age into something of true elegance.

Classic, enough said. It was all classic American oak and dill on the pop and pour, but the lithe cranberry, cherry, and leather of the Tempranillo eventually comes through. @Pappas Bros Steak House, Houston, TX.

I drink so little wine made with American Oak these days that this actually comes across as refreshing. Ironic! These guys are old school. Very long maceration which counter-intuitively lightens up the color and softens the edges in a oxidative sort of way (further, they rack barrel-to-barrel by hand). Amazing mouthfeel here. The acidity is very ample too but I don't think it takes over like many fashionable wines these days. This is the sort of wine that any customer can get behind. Lush but balanced. Old school, but approachable. Food friendly, but super easy to drink.

Stands out amongst a great group of wines. This is knockout representation of Rioja fruit.

Out of magnum. Juicy and vibrant but this dusty leather is keeping things really interesting.

Rich vanilla nose with ripe blackberries and almost raisin notes that also come through on the palate. Smooth with balanced acid and tannins. Happily sipped alone. Oaked vs Unoaked Rioja tasting - the oaked one. #spain #wanderlust2022
