Bichi
Listan Red Blend
Sour watermelon right here. To be honest, not sure I actually like it, but real interesting to try.

May 11th, 2019Light-ruby, Beaujolais-style red from recently recovered 100-year-old Listán Prieto (Mission) vines grown at 2,000-2,500 ft elevation in the mountains of Tecate, right on the border with California. Originally brought by Spanish missionaries and used to make sacramental wine - hence its name-, Mission was California's most prevalent grape variety in the 1800s and is still widely planted in Chile (where it is known as País), Peru (aka, Rosa del Perú), Argentina (Criolla Chica) and the Canary Islands (Palomino Negro). In the 20th Century, California uprooted most of its Mission vines it in favor of "nobler varieties" such as Cabernet Sauvignon, while south of the border, Bichi’s vineyards were abandoned for decades. Fortunately, they survived and after years without any pesticides (farmers refused to invest in them, even prune them), they became “minimal intervention” and organic by default. But thanks to the natural wine craze, Listan is back. It is fresh, smoky, and delicious, with hints of mezcal, hibiscus and iron.

1 person found it helpfulJun 6th, 2019This was an interesting wine to try. Very cloudy, purplish hues, little sediment. Overripe, almost wet, cherry aromas with some muddled woody notes. Tasted like raspberry and had a sharp tartness to it. Needs to be kept cool.

May 7th, 2022Has a faint smokiness, reminiscent of a mezcal with that kind of bite. Sour fruit when drank kind of warm.

Feb 26th, 2022This is exactly what I want in a red wine when it’s 100 degrees outside. Smoke and slight iodine on the nose. Smoke, watermelon, and strawberry on the palate. Lots of minerality and acidity to complement the fruit. The perfect easy-drinking, light red for me.
