Becker Vineyards
Texas High Plains Tempranillo
Celebrating Texas Wine Month with a little comparative tasting of what I think to be Texas’ best red varietal. I followed these over the course of a few days to see how they ended up.
For me, this epitomizes many people’s thoughts about TX wine. The nose is heavy on oak and sweet red fruit. More acidic than I expected. Palate is fairly flabby. Finish is one dimensional and very reminiscent of those cherry sour candies. As a Tempranillo, this felt too thin and had very little spice to it. If tasted blind, I would have guessed a watered down Meiomi Pinot.
For about $15 and it being a home state wine, it gets the job done, but not anything to write home about.

Strong oak and sweet red fruits on the nose, balanced tannin quickly fades away leaving fresh ripe fruits on your tongue. Good with pasta

Apr 22nd, 2018Nose is oak and cherry, some dried plum and later menthol. Dark purple, translucent rim, very bright. And then you take a sip: bam, acidity. Mouth puckering citric(?) acid, almost like lemon juice. I've never tasted this combination of oak and tart. Tannins also there, but kind of hidden. Finish is nice and long, attention going from fragrant, delicious nose to mouth watering tartness and back again. Fascinated! Went well with barbecue tacos and watermelon.
