Azores Wine Co.
António Maçanita Isabella a Proibida
Tart. Salty. Agree with the grape candy/sweet tart notes tasters mention. High acid. Isabella from Azores. Very unique.

Mar 7th, 2019Wow, very unique. Nose is wild - koolaid fruit punch, waxy dried flowers, sweet tart candy. In the glass it’s sour cherries, iron and salinity.

Dec 18th, 2018Neat wine with a neat story. Vitis Labrusca (banned in the EU) from volcanic soils. Fresh red and black fruit with a lovely mineral note. Nicely done

2 people found it helpfulJul 10th, 2016A historically significant grape on Long Island as well as Portugal. There’s some great research I’ve found over the years about the Isabella grape. If anything, this is a vine we should plant more of here on LI. This wine is really compelling. Tart, saline and joyful.

Mar 29th, 2021Interesting wine. Grape hull preserves, sour beer, cherry, iron. Had during COVID-19 social distancing, take out from Emilie’s.

Mar 20th, 2020Very interesting wine from the Azores. I heard the producer Antonio Macanita on Levi Dalton’s podcast and have been wanting to try - amusing to have the chance to do so off the northern coast of Newfoundland. Tons of ripe strawberry on the nose, and lots of light red fruit on first sip. With a bit of air the deeper earthy / volcanic notes come through, all knitted together with exceptional acid. Versatile pairing wine and generally both interesting and delicious.
