Vigna Ronco Al Maso Ghemme Nebbiolo
Ghemme is my sentimental favorite of the Novarese DOCs. I had a really good one when I was in my last year of college and starting my wine journey. It generally is one of the heavier and, sometimes, earthier of the group. This one is very good. Still youthful, it takes time to open up, but slowly reveals dark cherry, mahogany furniture, crushed minerally gravel, and roasted meat scents. Medium full, it’s got concentrated and tight dark cherry fruit, very fine-grained but abundantly chalky tannins, and very nice acidity. No rush to drink this. Enjoy over the next 4-5 years, maybe longer.

1 person found it helpfulFeb 5th, 2023Some of us, being Nebbiolo supplicants, love Ghemme for its paradoxical meaty, bloody, yet light qualities. This has it in spades, on the edge of cherry cough syrup but never quite there. The woods, especially on the nose. This wine would benefit from a large glass.
It’s a bit of a sneaky, under the radar winery, hopefully for a bit still.
Lots of cherries, loam, dirt, blood, stoniness. Delicious. A ‘17 feels just about right.

So-so Nebiolo. Decent fruit but flavor stops short of good.

Aug 30th, 2022Only rates this high after a couple of hours of opening. Super tight and barely aromatic upon opening. Eventually gets to a more traditional tar and roses Nebbiolo bouquet. Slight truffles, wet earth, and cherry in the mix. Fairly tannic after an hour open and eases up after two.

May 7th, 2022Garagiste selection. $34.98. Excellent Nebbiolo. Dark berry tones with strong tannins.

Mar 27th, 2022Interesting Nebbiolo. Agreed, rather rustic. On the nose, truffles, black fruit and earth. In the mouth, truffles, mushroom and black fruit (cassis, blackberries). High acid, medium-high tannins, slight sweetness. Long finish.
