Achával-Ferrer
Mendoza Cabernet Sauvignon
Combining grapes from the Uco Valley and Luján de Cuyo, Achaval Ferrer bottled this Cabernet Sauvignon after aging it for 12 months in used French barrels. Deep red with a purple sheen. The nose offers licorice, black currant and white pepper. Firm, grippy tannins set off the core of a fruit-forward palate and a lengthy, smoky finish. Will grow more well-rounded with time. (Joaquín Hidalgo, Vinous, October 2020)

1 person found it helpfulFeb 8th, 2016TGIF. This week my Cabernet fix is an Argentinian delight.
Dirty ruby in color with a short brick rim.
Strong nose of blackberries, cherries, plums, herbs, earth, pine, toasted oak, leather, licorice, vanilla, vegetables, vinegar, chocolates, coffee and peppercorn.
Medium bodied and smooth, with medium plus acidity and long legs.
Extra dry on the palate with cherries, plums, blueberries, blackberries, vanilla, oak, licorice, spices, chocolates, vegetables, earth, tobacco, beef jerky and peppercorn.
Medium plus on the finish with soft tannins and raspberries.
This is a great Great Argentinian Cabernet. Smooth, luxurious, almost balanced, and needs a couple of years in the bottle to mature. Shows nice acidity, complexity and earthiness.
Enjoyable by itself or with food, and would pair nicely with a nice piece of steak.
100% Cabernet Sauvignon grapes from Mendoza, unfined and Unfiltered. Needs at least an hour to open up properly.
14.5% alcohol by volume.

May 12th, 2015Blackberry cobbler with Swiss cheese! Mint breath, and Rosemary dough. Why are Mendoza cabs so good? They run rings around the Malbecs more often than not. The presumption that each country needs its own varietal to give it meaning, is a misnomer. Sometimes a varietal has so calculatingly written itself into our genetics by rewiring our neural pathways, that any permutation thereof is an epiphany! Abrigado, cabbie, you little virus! Dark, and backberrylicoricious! Mintcurrantacular! A fun wine with a well of shadows! Like Catena, it's cabs take the crown!
