Great Southern Riesling
The Great Southern in WA had to be one of my favourite regions for Aussie Riesling. It’s just so darn good.
A big thank you to Jo & team for sending over their latest 2022 Riesling for us to try. It was literally consume in what felt like a blink of the eye.
Super thirst quenching, satin-smooth and one bottle is just not enough 🤤
It’s a straw green colour in the glass with fresh tangy apples, just squeezed lime juice and a hint of lemongrass on the nose. I simply love the texture of this Rizza, so smooth and all the elements are in perfect harmony. Juicy finish which pops with flavour. More please!
Perfect with our lentil and chickpea curry 🍛 with garlic naan 🫓 😋

Spot-on Riesling. Beautiful fruit, beautifully realised. A touch of sweetness, pure, long and very easy to enjoy. Class.

Dec 26th, 2014Did you catch my tasting note this morning? It was for the 2018 version of this Riesling (flick back a post to take a read).
And this here is the brand new released 2019 Great Southern Riesling. Thank you 3drops for the sample bottle 😘
Firstly I have to say I’m loving the spruced up labels for the new releases. How classy does it look 😍
And you know what? It’s just as good on the inside as it is on the outside 🙌
Here are our notes:
It’s a clean pale yellow-green colour in the glass. The nose is full of Granny Smith apples 🍏, a bit of lanolin, plenty of citrus and a whiff of minerality. While in the mouth it’s super crisp and clean with a medley of lemon, lime and grapefruit citrus flavours with some crunchy apple in there too. Move over G&T, there’s a new refreshing beverage in town 😜
This wine was sent to me as a sample, I was under no obligation to post about it.

We tried this 2018 Great Southern Riesling up against its 2019 counterpart to see the difference year on year. While the quality was definitely consistent year on year, they did have their own unique points of difference.
Have you ever done a tasting where you’ve tried the same wine over multiple vintages?
Before I get into our notes, I just want to say thank you to 3 drops for sending us over these samples to try. Mr Spittoon and I love our wines from WA’s Great Southern region. If you haven’t tasted the wines from this region yet, you might want to hunt some out stat 😜
We found this 2018 Riesling a very pale straw colour in the glass. It has a deliciously inviting vibrant nose full of lime acidity, minerality, white flowers and juicy nectarines. While in the mouth it almost has a sherbet like acidity to it, yet it’s incredibly smooth and hands down 100% refreshing. If you can resist, some time in the cellar would be great for this one.

My parents are currently visiting from New Zealand which was the perfect excuse to crack this 1.5 litre 2017 3drops Riesling magnum I received as a gift back in Perth.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
3drops are a wine and olive oil producer from Mt Barker in Western Australia’s Great Southern Wine Region. This cool climate wine region is perfect for growing Riesling grapes which can be made into dry, fresh and citrus driven tipples like this one.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We all really enjoyed this elegant and crisp Riesling. Despite its size, the contents were gone very quickly between the 4 of us 🥂
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Thanks @joanne3drops 😘

⚡️New Release⚡️
Introducing the 2017 3 Drops Riesling from WA’s Great Southern Wine Region. We enjoyed this vino with an ‘African Wild Rice’ dish I made from my new Ripe Deli cookbook. The dish was full of black & red rice, pumpkin, spices and chorizo to name a few of the tasty ingredients. The crisp wine went well with it.
It’s a straw-like colour on the eye. Notes of crisp green apples 🍏, a squeeze of lime and hints of minerality come through on the nose. While in the mouth it’s very much citrus driven and has a definite refreshing character. It quenches the thirst superbly!

So my #winewednesday was pretty good! Homemade fish tacos 🌮 and Great Southern Riesling = happiness!
This 2017 Riesling will be showcased at the upcoming Business Women Australia event at the Hyatt on November 1st. The evening will be hosted by Joanne Bradbury from 3 Drops and it promises to be a great night of wine, food and networking. And I hear there are still tickets -> businesswomenaustralia.com.au/progressive-wine-dinner-extravaganza-with-3drops
It’s nearly water white with a hint of yellow on the eye. I found the nose had very lovely fruity aromatics - think apples and pears, some minerality and a hint of honeydew melon. This Riesling is super fresh and vibrant with plenty of juicy flavour in the mouth. The brilliant acidity is wonderfully refreshing, it’ll be very interesting to see how this one ages. At the BWA dinner it’ll be matched with a King Salmon Galette entree 👌

This was the third Riesling in our recent 3 Drops wine flight (see 2 notes prior to this for the 2015 & 2016) and one I was very excited about - I do love my Rieslings with a bit of age on them. I find the complexity and flavours they gain really interesting and of course tasty.
In the glass the 12 is yellow with a slight brassy tinge. Toasted apricots come through on the nose with a trace of minerality. I swear every time I went back for a taste I'd find something completely different but these are the words I kept coming back to; lemon butter, waxy finish, fine acidity & slightly dusty. Highly enjoyable and drinking well right now.

If you didn't catch my tasting note yesterday it was for this ones younger sister, the new release 2016 @joanne3drops. I was amazed at how different these two vintages were and how much 1 year in the bottle can do - side by side it was clear the 2015 was the older of the two. Also this was Mr. Spittoon's favourite of the 3 vintages (we also tried the 2012)! It's a light yellow colour with a hint of green. On the nose it's flinty with slightly toasted orchard fruit coming through and I couldn't help but pick up hints of feijoa. The palate has a creamy texture with a mix of honeydew melon and crisp apples. I really loved the finish, full of flavour and 100% refreshing.

This 2016 Riesling is a brand new release from the 3 Drops team down in WA's Great Southern Wine Region. I was lucky enough to try this alongside their 2015 and 2012 Rieslings - it was amazing to taste the difference in each vintage. Even the 15 and 16 were distinctively different. As expected the 2016 has a definite fresh and vibrant swagger to it.
In the glass it's virtually a water white colour with a slight yellow/green hue. Fresh white flowers, green pear and lime juice aromas rise out of the glass. The palate is textural with crisp acidity and flavours of apple candies and a lemon honey ice tea. Completely smashable!
