This week's must-try wines are from Antonio Galloni’s article Spotlight on Rosso di Montalcino . Enjoy an excerpt from his article and his notes for this week's top ten below! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ “Rosso di Montalcino sometimes gets overlooked in the rush to focus solely on Brunello. That’s a shame, as the best Rossos offer pedigreed expressions of Sangiovese from this magical hillside town and its surrounding vineyards. At the same time, styles and overall quality are variable, which makes navigating Rosso a bit of a minefield. Here’s everything you need to know…” --Antonio Galloni, Spotlight on Rosso di Montalcino, October 2019 1. Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona 2017 Rosso di Montalcino 2. Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona

Rosso di Montalcino Sangiovese 2017

Delectable Wine
8.9

Ciacci's 2017 Rosso di Montalcino is racy and inviting, as wines from this vintage tend to be. Soft curves push forward a core of succulent red cherry, sweet spice, tobacco, dried flowers and rose petal. Although the 2017 has quite a bit of richness, it remains translucent and very Sangiovese in feel. The Rosso is a very pretty wine, and a terrific value. Delectable Wine
8.9

Mocali's 2016 Rosso di Montalcino is soft and easygoing, with pretty dark cherry, mint, leather, spice and tobacco flavors. This fruity, open-knit Rosso is best enjoyed over the next handful of years. (Antonio Galloni, Vinous, October 2019) — 11 days ago

Pian dell'Orino

Rosso di Montalcino Sangiovese 2015

Delectable Wine
9.2

The 2015 Rosso di Montalcino is soft, supple and very pretty. Sweet tobacco, crushed flowers, mint, licorice and dried herbs add lovely aromatic nuance to this mid-weight, gracious Rosso. Silky fruit and soft contours add to the wine's considerable personality, immediacy and appeal. The 2015 is not super-complex, but it is immensely delicious. Drink it over the next handful of years. Rosso di Montalcino Sangiovese 2015

Delectable Wine
9.0

The 2015 Rosso di Montalcino is an attractive wine to drink now and over the next few years, while the flavors remain vibrant. Sweet pipe tobacco, crushed flowers, worn-in leather and dried cherries are all nicely laced together in this mid-weight, inviting Rosso. This is very nicely done. Delectable Wine

Collosorbo's 2016 Rosso di Montalcino offers terrific density and plushness, qualities that are so typical of the wines from the southern reaches of the appellation. Succulent dark cherry, mocha, spice, leather and licorice all meld together in a deep, resonant Rosso that exudes richness and textural intensity. This is such a gorgeous wine. Tenuta Le Potazzine

le Potazzine Gorelli Rosso di Montalcino Sangiovese 2016

Delectable Wine
9.2

The 2016 Rosso di Montalcino from Le Potazzine is a total showstopper. All of the purity, the translucence, the energy, that makes Sangiovese so alluring comes through in Le Potazzine's 2016 Rosso. Bright red cherry fruit, mint, spice, rose petal and cedar are all beautifully lifted in a refined, impeccable Rosso that will dazzle readers with its total elegance and class. I loved it. Siro Pacenti

Rosso di Montalcino Sangiovese 2015

Delectable Wine
9.3

The 2015 Rosso di Montalcino is one of the most nuanced and delicate wines of the vintage. Sweet red cherry, mint, spice and star anise all run through the 2015. Light on its feet and gracious (for a Pacenti Rosso), the 2015 is absolutely gorgeous in the way it melds together the textural richness that is a signature of this wine with tons of Sangiovese character. I loved it. (Antonio Galloni, Vinous, October 2019) — 11 days ago

Fattoria dei Barbi (Colombini)

Rosso di Montalcino Sangiovese 2016

The 2016 Rosso di Montalcino exudes character and nuance. Pipe tobacco, cedar, licorice, dried flowers and crushed red berry fruit all fill out the wine's frame. This mid-weight, savory Rosso packs a real punch, with bright acids that punctuate the finish. (Antonio Galloni, Vinous, October 2019) — 11 days ago

Azienda Agraria Lisini

Rosso di Montalcino Sangiovese 2016

Delectable Wine
9.0

Lisini's 2016 Rosso di Montalcino is such a fascinating wine. Delicate and floral in its first impression, the 2016 has plenty of the structural kick that is such a Lisini signature, but here it is expressed in more of an understated way. Dried rose petal, spice and gravel notes add lovely layers of nuance. (Antonio Galloni, Vinous, October 2019) — 11 days ago

La Cerbaiola di Salvioni Giulio

Rosso di Montalcino Sangiovese 2016

Delectable Wine
9.3

The 2016 Rosso di Montalcino is a gorgeous wine for readers who want to get a good sense of the Salvioni house style. Powerful and virile, with tons of personality, the 2016 is terrific. Grilled herbs, smoke, tobacco, licorice and menthol wrap around a core of dark Sangiovese fruit in this brooding, intense Rosso from the Salvioni family. The savory qualities of Sangiovese come through beautifully here. This is such a gorgeous Rosso. (Antonio Galloni, Vinous, October 2019) — 11 days ago
